The Year I Stopped Optimising My Mornings

For a long time my mornings had a spreadsheet. Wake at six, water, stretch, journal, read ten pages, cold shower, coffee only after the journal. It looked wonderful written down and felt like a test I failed most days by seven fifteen.

This year I quietly dropped all of it except two things: bread or toast with something on it, and coffee drunk sitting down. No phone at the table. That is the whole routine now.

What changed

The days did not get worse. If anything they got kinder. Without a checklist to fall behind on, the morning became a place I wanted to be instead of a place I had to perform.

I still read. I still write. I just do it when I feel like it, which turns out to be more often than when I was told to by my own list.
