Why I Still Carry a Film Camera

Every few months someone asks why I bother. My phone takes sharper pictures, my digital camera focuses faster, and film costs money every time I press the shutter.

All of that is true. It is also the point. Knowing each frame costs something makes me look twice before I take it, and looking twice is most of photography.

The waiting

The other half is the waiting. A roll sits in a drawer for a week, sometimes a month, and when the scans come back I have forgotten half of what is on it. I see the pictures as a stranger would, which is the only honest way to judge them.

I do not shoot film for nostalgia. I shoot it because it slows the part of me that wants to collect instead of see.
