A flat white sky is the largest softbox you will ever work under. Shadows go gentle, highlights stop clipping, and colours sit still long enough to be photographed honestly.
The barns on the edge of the village look their best on days like this. No drama, no golden glow, just wood and roof and field in the light they actually live in.
Learning to see grey
It took me years to stop waiting for sunsets. Most of life happens under ordinary skies, and a photograph that respects that has a calm to it that a dramatic one rarely does.
If you are stuck, go out on the dullest day of the week. Leave the expectations at home and photograph exactly what is there.
