The project started as a way to get unstuck. Instead of photographing things, I would photograph the shapes they made on walls and pavements.
Within a week I was seeing shadows everywhere. Railings on stairs, leaves on doors, a stranger stretched long across the afternoon street.
Light first
Most of the time we photograph objects and light is incidental. Reverse that and the world starts to look abstract, graphic, strange.
I am back to photographing things now. But I see the light first, and that is the project’s real legacy.
