A Cabin, a Fire, and No Wi-Fi

The cabin was at the edge of a pine forest, an hour’s walk from the nearest road. Smoke rose from the chimney when we arrived; the owner had lit the stove for us.

We spent four days doing very little. Chopping wood. Reading. Walking to the river and back. Cooking slowly because there was no reason to cook quickly.

Simple days

Without a screen to fill the evenings we talked, played cards, and went to bed early. By the third night we were sleeping nine hours.

I am not sure what we came back with, except the sense that we had been somewhere for real.
