Five Days in the Highlands, No Plan

We left Fort William on a Thursday with no bookings and a vague idea of heading north. The plan, such as it was, fit on the back of a receipt: drive until the light goes, stop where it looks good, and never eat at a place with a laminated menu.

Pine forest in morning fog
The first morning: fog sat in the trees until almost eleven.

What we packed

  • One camera, one lens, two batteries
  • A paper map, because the signal gives up past Ullapool
  • Far too many jumpers

The best stops were the ones we would have driven past if we had a schedule to keep.

From my notebook, day two

On the second day we found a loch so still it looked like a sheet of glass. We sat there for an hour and didn’t take a single photo, then took forty in five minutes when a heron landed.

Not ours, sadly. But it is how the trip felt.

No plan is still a plan. It is just a quieter one.

Next week: the one place we booked ahead, and why we regretted it.
