The rule was simple: no maps, no reviews, no booked anything. If a street looked interesting, take it. If a door was open, look inside.
By lunchtime I had found a covered arcade with a café that has clearly not changed its menu since the seventies. By evening I had walked twenty kilometres and seen almost none of the famous sights.
Lost on purpose
Getting lost is a skill we have mostly forgotten. Our phones make sure we never take a wrong turn, which also means we never take an interesting one.
I found my way back to the hotel by asking a woman walking her dog. She pointed, smiled, and told me I had missed the best bakery by one street.
