A friend invited me to spend an afternoon on her family’s farm. I brought one camera and the intention to photograph nothing in particular.
The horses found me first. They are curious and patient, and they will stand in the same patch of light for exactly as long as it takes you to stop fiddling with your settings.
Patience over gear
The trick with animals is the same as with people: stop trying so hard. Stand still, let them come to you, and wait for the moment they forget you are there.
I converted most of the day to black and white. Without colour, the texture of a mane or the shape of an eye carries the whole picture.
