What I Learned from a Week Offline

I set an out-of-office, deleted the apps from my phone, and told my family to call if anything urgent happened. Nothing urgent happened.

The first two days I kept reaching for my pocket. By day four the habit had faded, and I noticed I was thinking in longer sentences.

Coming back

Coming back was harder than leaving. Hundreds of emails, most of which had resolved themselves without me.

I will not live offline. But I now take one day a week without screens, and it is the best day of the week.
